The embalming is the practice of conservation, hygiene and presentation on the bodies of the deceased to make dead people their dignity and a calm appearance. This operation has several purposes: stop bacterial evolution, normally very fast, stop cell destruction leading to the decay of tissues and evacuate very bacterial physiological fluids.

The embalming takes place on a mortuary table. Initially, the Embalming people undressing the deceased and cleans the body with disinfectant products. Subsequently, he proceeds to a massage to reduce the body rigidity. The second step is to inject a product of formaldehyde to stop bacterial evolution and brake the decomposition of the body. The Embalmer then recovers these liquids for their cremation, drains the gases that have accumulated in the body, stitches the incisions he has practiced and proceeds to the drainage of the natural orifices. Depending on the State of the corpse and the proposed shelf life, he uses fluids more or less dosed in formaldehyde. Finally, he dressed the deceased, makeup it with cosmetics adapted to make it presentable for family and loved ones during the exhibition in funeral home or at the home. All these operations takes 1 h 30 to 2 hours, sometimes more if a plaster cast of the face of the deceased is necessary.
The practice of the embalming:
Practice the embalming to the national degree of Embalmer, recognized by the Ministry of health: theory 3 months and 3 months of practice are provided in an authorized training center. Program: Anatomy, theory of conservation care, microbiology, addiction, histology, forensics and restoration. The review includes a written test of 6 h and the realization of a conservation treatment.
The main risks of the trade are related to the use of toxic products and tools sharp and pungent. The nosocomial risk is not negligible either, in case the deceased on which operates the Embalmer has previously stayed in hospital.
As a general rule, the embalming people are employed by funeral companies, but they can leave the private sector to integrate specialized municipal service. With the experience gained as an employee, an Embalmer has the opportunity to set up his own. Note: the practice of the profession requires prefectural authorization.
The embalming is not mandatory except in some cases such as for example during a repatriation from abroad.
